Last Saturday was Cheltenham Wine Festival and the weeks leading up to it were pretty busy as I made wine scented candles in bottles from Gloucester Studio, wine jam and then (at the last minute) wine cupcakes.
I suspected (quite rightly as it turned out) that people who liked wine would probably be interested in eating at Gloucester Studio but I wanted to do something with my stall and the alcoholic cupcakes were a big hit.
It was a great event with some truly hilarious people.
My favourite quote of the day was early in the first session when a woman paused at my stall and I offered her a cake sample. ‘Oh no,’ she said as though I was being quite ridiculous. ‘It is far too early for cake!’ My mum and I looked at the wine glass in her hand then back to her face before the three of us burst out laughing.
Another person to make me laugh was a man late in the day who looked at me in disgust and said, ‘I didn’t come here for cake!’ as though I had offered him something truly offensive. I like to think he’d have been a little more polite had he been able to walk in a straight line.
The cupcakes themselves proved to be a real talking point and I was quite happy to be nicknamed “Cake Lady” for the day. Most people loved the quirky combinations (Sauvignon Blanc with a hint of Lemon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chocolate, and Rose with Rose) although almost everyone had really strong feelings about their favourite. Most white wine drinkers found the Rose with Rose too floral, red wine drinkers often thought the Sauvignon Blanc with a hint of Lemon was too sweet and some white wine drinkers thought the Cabernet Sauvignon was too boozy.
I found it fascinating that when I asked what people drank, I could soon guess which cake they’d like most. Although of course there were plenty who liked them all (and one or two who weren’t at all convinced).
Maybe cake is the ultimate personality test?
Have a great week.
