My brother and sister-in-law recently visited us from Hong Kong. We managed to find a date in the diary when my stepbrothers were free and for the first time in four years we all met up. Naturally I wanted to create a somewhat special meal and quickly struck upon Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
I began things with an afternoon tea since small cakes with Eat Me spelled out in currants was essential and I loved the idea of recreating the scene where rocks are thrown at Alice but turn to small cakes when they hit her. My children agreed with my idea and happily threw cherry rock cakes at their Aunts and Uncles. We had a caucus race around the paddling pool and played a game where all the adults received an unBirthday present.
I started the main meal by serving a mushroom pithivier while the children waved incense sticks and psychedelic trance music played and we finished by painting white chocolate ice cream roses red with hot raspberry sauce. There were plenty of silly details but the food was a hit and fuelled us late into the night as we talked and reconnected.
I’ve got a few restaurant bookings for autumn/winter where meals will be taking on a bit of a theme and I’m really looking forward to them. I hope you’re having a lovely summer.
